Following close behind the low-power Nano X2 comes the Eden X2, or what VIA is calling "the world's most power-efficient" fanless dual-core processor. While we've yet to see any official numbers, the original Eden did 500MHz on one watt of power, so we should see similarly thrifty specs here. Aside from that, the unit houses two 64-bit cores in a 21 x 21 millimeter package, is compatible with Windows CE and Linux operating systems, and was built using a 40-nanometer manufacturing process. The You Rock guitar is similar to the Mustang in that it has real strings for strumming, though they don't stretch along the full length of the guitar. Unlike the Mustang's many, many buttons, the You Rock features a touch-sensitive fret board. The You Rock also functions as a MIDI instrument and includes many built in sounds and effects.

Those wishing to use the You Rock for Rock Band 3 will need to download firmware 1.2 from the You Rock website. Like the Fender Squier, the You Rock requires the Mad Catz MIDI adapter for use with Rock Band 3. Last week's Switched On discussed Nokia's quest to help Microsoft create a third mobile ecosystem alongside those of Apple and Google. That word – ecosystem – has clearly passed into the pantheon of buzzwords, leveraging many synergies from purpose-built paradigms. And yet, building and maintaining ecosystems is something few companies really understand. True technology ecosystems are more than just successful platforms or throwing many products together simply because they are owned by the same company. They are characterized by strategically implemented nurturing.

One concept that Apple seems to have adapted from natural ecosystems is the concept of the water cycle you probably learned about in grade school. Apple turns up the heat on the life-sustaining water of innovation that passes between the well-grounded Mac market and the soaring growth of the iOS market. Apple alluded to this cycle in its Back to the Mac event. After inheriting many technologies from Mac OS X, iOS began offering Mac OS X launch screens, full-screen apps, app resuming, and document autosaving. This week's announcements, though, show that the cycle may soon be heading again in the other direction as Apple showed off two Mac technologies that may well wind up strengthening the iOS ecosystem.

many explanations that discuss Crysis 2 is always going to be torn between two things: it looks, and how to play. When I check the single player part of the PC version of Crysis 2 months ago, I was surprised as much by how well controlled on the pad 360 as how the version that looks fantastic, and I also went with some serious questions about how it will run on consoles. Last week, things shifted around a bit when I spend time with multiplayer Crysis 2 on the Xbox 360, and I was surprised by two things: how great it looked, and how not so great it is playing.



Thankfully, it looks like most of the graphical issues we saw at Gamescom last year and last year's multiplayer beta on 360 last year have been worked out, as Crysis 2 is clearly in the running for best looking console game out there. It's the atmosphere and lighting that really impresses. Levels are huge with a ton of routes and traversal options, and the constant shifts between darkness and daylight in Skyline, the level included in this week's demo, in particular are striking.






Crysis 2 was so striking, in fact, that it took me a few minutes with the game to realize that something wasn't quite right with Crysis 2's controls on the 360. Eventually, it hit me: Crysis 2 on 360 has some seriously laggy controller response. While some of Crysis 2's control idiosyncrasies make sense - a delay between hitting the jump button and flying into the air makes you feel like a cyborg hurling himself upward - simple things like aiming and strafing just aren't as responsive as they should be. What breaks my heart is the theory that this might be tied to the preview build's framerate - if Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical of TimeSplitters and, uh, Haze fame) can tone the graphics down in multiplayer somewhat to get something that feels more responsive, it would be the right move, but it would still hurt my heart a little.  and according to news obtained Crysis 2 will be released on 2 March

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn  on IGN's top 25 modern PC games list and will probably continue to say it as nostalgia gradually warps my memory. Since Dragon Age: Origins was purportedly a spiritual successor, I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to play, and play I did when it was finally released in 2009. Though it didn't turn me into the hopeless, bleary-eyed obsessive I became after Baldur's Gate II launched, it still played all the right notes, even if some of the complexity had been stripped out after the Dungeons & Dragons days.

On PC, Dragon Age: Origins was unflinchingly difficult even at the standard setting, which made intelligent party tactics and frequent use of the pause function essential to victory. That's exactly how I thought it should be. Then I played the Xbox 360 version, and for a moment I looked around as if someone might be playing a trick on me. The framerate was a mess and, by comparison, the challenge seemed more about dealing with the interface than chopping down enemies. That may just be some of my PC elitism bleeding through since I know a number of people who loved Dragon Age on consoles, but it's a perspective that's hard to shake after experiencing the relative convenience of the PC version.

Armageddon will debut on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on May 31. The title was originally slated to debut in March but last year was pushed back to May.

The game picks up roughly 50 years later and focuses on Darius Mason, Alec's grandson. As in previous Red Faction games, cleaning up a big mess will require making an even bigger mess, thanks to a focus on physics-based destruction. Armageddon will provide players some new surroundings to explosively customize, from ice caves to lava flows.

In support of Armageddon, THQ will release a downloadable series entry, Red Faction: Battlegrounds for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, as well as Red Faction: Origins, a television movie created in partnership with the SyFy Channel.

This morning, Craig and Don Mattrick, president, Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB), announced plans to release a non-commercial Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit, or SDK, this spring.

The community that has blossomed since the launch of Kinect for Xbox 360 in November shows the breadth of invention and depth of imagination possible when people have access to ground-breaking technology. Already, researchers, academics and enthusiasts are thinking through what’s next in natural and intuitive technology. For example, in January I mentioned Craig’s talk at the Cleveland Clinic, where he highlighted students at the University of Washington’s Biorobotics Lab using Kinect with a commercially available PHANTOM Omni Haptic Device to explore how robotic surgery could be enhanced by incorporating the sense of feel.

The Kinect for Windows SDK is being developed and released by Microsoft Research (MSR) in collaboration with IEB.  It will be available this spring as a free download, and will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system—such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself.

Supporting this community and enabling creativity around natural user interfaces (NUI) is important to us, and our hope is that this SDK will ignite further creativity in an already vibrant ecosystem of enthusiasts. We are very excited by this announcement. Not only does it showcase our investment in this important technology trend, but it ensures that people have the tools they desire to revolutionize how people interact with technology.
